Overview

Montana INBRE is pleased to announce a Technology Access Grant program open to biomedical investigators to utilize participating core facilities located within Regional Alliance of INBRE Network (RAIN) participating states (Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, and Wyoming). An array of biomedical research projects may be supported, including metabolomics, biomarker analysis, transcriptomics, genomics, social science surveys and other social science projects, and/or bioinformatic and biostatistics support. Successful applications will receive funding to cover core facility costs for data collection and analysis, consulting, or student training. Typical funding levels are $1,000 - 3,000 but may be more (or less) depending on the project needs and justification. Funding awarded will be paid directly to the core facility, and services must be completed no later than April 1, 2025. No carryover is allowed.

Eligibility and Clarifications

  • Faculty-level biomedical researchers with an appointment in a RAIN state (Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, or Wyoming) may submit proposals
  • Postdoctoral fellows and graduate students of eligible faculty are also eligible to apply but must provide a letter of support from their PI/mentor
  • Proposals originating from a Montana-based investigator may request to access any participating core facility located within Montana or across the RAIN network
  • Proposals submitted by researchers based in Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, and Wyoming may only propose use of a Montana-based core facility
  • Projects must reflect overall biomedical research goals of the Montana INBRE program

Deadlines

  • Proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis beginning October 7, 2024
  • The priority review deadline is November 15, 2024
  • Proposals will continue to be considered through January 24, 2025, or until available funding is exhausted

Proposal Checklist

  • A Brief Proposal Description detailing the underlying research, the partnering core facility and services requested, and statements of relevance to any past or current INBRE project funding; successful descriptions will be brief yet include specific details such as sample numbers needed for analysis; those requesting more than $3,000 should supply justification here (1000 words max)
  • A Project Timeline, by month, detailing when key milestones (i.e. sample collection) will be completed, when Core Facility services will be performed, and when requested funding will be expended; research activities may not go beyond April 15, 2024, though prospective downstream outcome/output activities (i.e. publications, grant proposals) beyond the terminal date may be included.
  • A Price Quote from your proposed Core Facility to access its services (PDF)
  • A Statement of Anticipated Grant Submissions arising from the access award
  • A Statement of Anticipated Manuscript Submissions arising from the access award
  • A Brief Statement of Compliance Status: If your proposed research involves human subjects, clinical trials, vertebrate animals, or biosafety protocols, describe the status of compliance approvals (if relevant)
  • Documentation for Human Subjects, Clinical Trial, IRB, Vertebrate Animals, and/or Biosafety (PDF documents, if relevant to your proposed research)

Reporting and Grant Acknowledgement Requirements

A report of the major findings will be required at the end of the project. As a follow up, investigators will be asked to report annually to the INBRE program for five years after an award on subsequent manuscripts, grant applications, conference presentations, and other outputs that were impacted or stimulated by the technology access award funding.

Program awardees are required to acknowledge the INBRE grant award numbers for their respective states in all grant proposals, presentations, and publications that benefited from the technology access funding. The National Institutes of Health requires that peer-reviewed publications resulting from this funding comply with its Public Access Policy, including successfully depositing the manuscript into NIH’s PubMed Central and reporting a valid PMCID number to Montana INBRE. Manuscripts should also acknowledge any core facilities that provided data, data analysis, or student training.

Research Compliance

All proposed research must comply with university policies and governmental regulations. Projects requiring IRB, Biosafety or IACUC should have approvals documented at the time of proposal submission to ensure project readiness. NIH grants policies as described in the NIH Grants Policy Statement will apply to the applications submitted and awards made in response to this FOA.

Review Process and Selection Criteria

    1. Only complete applications will be considered
    2. Only one proposal per investigator will be considered
    3. All eligible applications will be reviewed by the Montana INBRE Data Science Core (DSC)
    4. Priority consideration will be given to proposals from early stage / junior investigators as well as those from Primarily Undergraduate Institutions, Community Colleges, and Tribal Colleges
    5. Upon selection, the applicant will be notified by Montana INBRE; Core Managers will then work with the investigator to finalize project plans and assist in completion of the project
    6. Selection criteria will be based on:
      • Scientific merit and readiness
      • Ability to complete proposed work prior to April 1, 2025
      • Likelihood that the project will provide data for a publication or grant application
      • Availability of core resources to complete the project in a timely manner

Allowable Costs

Technology Access funds must be expended no later than April 1, 2025. No carry-forward will be allowed. We anticipate making 10-15 awards depending on number of proposals received and the availability of funds. Awarded funds will be used to pay core facility charges directly (no subawards will be made). Core facilities must directly invoice Montana INBRE for payment of services.
